Olympic Figure Skater Dies

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) - James Grogan, a figure skater who won the 1952 Olympic bronze medal and
was a four-time silver medalist at the world championships, has died. He was 68.

Grogan died suddenly Monday of multiple organ failure at St. Bernardine's Medical Center, said his son, J.D.
Grogan.

He won Olympic bronze in Oslo, Norway in 1952 as Dick Button of the United States won the gold. Grogan won
the silver medal at four consecutive world championships, beginning in 1951.

He was inducted into the U.S. Figure Skating Association Hall of Fame in 1991.

After leaving competition, Grogan went on to appear in Arthur Wirtz's ``Hollywood Ice Review'' and starred in
the Ice Capades in the 1950s.

He continued to skate while serving in the Army, where he was pulled from basic training to appear with
Olympic skater Sonja Henie's European troop show, said Cindy Lang, a publicist with the Ice Castle
International Training Center at Lake Arrowhead, where Grogan was a coach since 1985.

Grogan was instrumental in developing the Ice Castle into a mecca for world-class skaters such as Michelle
Kwan, Lang said.

He is survived by his wife, Yasuko Grogan, daughter Roko Grogan, and his son.
