Lee Ann Miele, 57, dies; judge, official in synchronized skating
NARRAGANSETT -- Lee Ann Miele, 57, of Gardiner Street, an international judge in
synchronized skating, died Thursday at Roger Williams Medical Center, Providence.
She was the wife of Gerald A. Miele. Born in Providence, a daughter of the late Dr.
Nicholas and Anna (Armstrong) Migliaccio, she had been a longtime Narragansett
resident, and previously resided in Cranston.
Mrs. Miele was an international and world judge in synchronized skating, and a
national judge and referee for the United States Figure Skating Association.
She served on the board of directors for the USFSA, and was a chairwoman and vice
chairwoman for several of its committees. She had judged international
synchronized-skating competitions in the United States, France, Italy, Sweden,
Finland and England.
Mrs. Miele was scheduled to judge the national championships to be held in Los
Angeles next month, the winners of which would represent the United States in this
year's Olympics.
Locally, Mrs. Miele was past president of the Pawtucket and Providence Figure
Skating Club, and helped organize the United States Figure Skating Championships
held in Providence in 1995.
She was a member of the Registry of Medical Technologists, the American Society of
Clinical Pathologists, the United States Figure Skating Association/International
Skating Union, the Wesquage Beach Association and the University of Rhode Island
Alumni Association.
Mrs. Miele was a 1965 graduate of the University of Rhode Island, majoring in biology.
Upon graduation, she attended and completed cytology training at the Institute of
Pathology at Our Lady of Fatima Hospital, North Providence. She was a graduate of
Cranston High School East, Class of 1961.
An avid horse lover, she competed in her early years in local and regional equestrian
events. Her love for skating and competing as a teenager brought her into the judging
and the organization of skating as a club sport, and she later entered the sport's
national and international arenas.
Besides her husband, she leaves twin sons, Nicholas J. Miele of Cranston and Gerald
M. Miele of Greenville.
The funeral will be held Monday at 9:45 a.m. from Nardolillo Funeral Home, South
County Chapel, 1111 Boston Neck Rd., with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 in St.
